Chapter Nine

Questions

I woke to the sound of my ringing cell phone, wrapped tightly in Cayden’s arms on the couch in the living room of the suite. We never actually made it to the bedroom. It took me a moment to focus, to think about where my cell phone was located. I twisted my way out from the protection of Cayden’s body to find the shirt I had on last night and pulled my cell phone from the left top pocket. I gazed down upon Cayden sleeping and perfect and felt my cheeks flush with the memory of last night. We could have given the Kama Sutra a few new ideas or at the very least worn out the couch, the chair, the ottoman, and the arm of the couch with our lovemaking.

“Hello,” I whispered my greeting, picked up the shirt, and quickly shrugged it on while I walked away from the couch.

“Winter, dear, this is Doctor Carlyle. I’m calling because we have been concerned.”

When I last saw Doctor Carlyle and Mrs. Carlyle, Austin’s parents, we spoke of getting together again for dinner. I could only imagine with all that was showing up in the press, and the fact they hadn’t heard back from me, they were worried.

“Doctor Carlyle, I am sorry. I know we were going to get together again. Things have been a little crazy.”

I heard Cayden stir, so I turned to look at him. He was shirtless but had slipped on his jeans, only they were partly unbuttoned. My gaze shifted down to see the thin dark line of hair on his lower belly. I knew where it led, but I couldn’t help myself. He was covered just enough to allow me to fantasize about the perfection within the pants. Cayden must have noticed my ogling because he shot me a devilish smile. I don’t know who invented button-fly jeans, but whoever did, God bless them.

“Winter, are you still there, dear?”

I shook my head in an attempt to gain my senses and cleared my throat. “Ahem...um, yes, sorry. I was a little bit preoccupied with something. Forgive me, you have my full attention now,” I confirmed. I looked away from Cayden’s glorious body and forced myself to walk over toward the windows.

Doctor Carlyle’s voice sounded strange, stressed maybe. “Winter love, are you okay?”

“Yes. I am fine.” I felt Cayden’s hands. They brushed though my hair and across my neck while I spoke, followed by his lips….

Oh holy crap.

“Uh…is everything okay with you and Mrs. Carlyle?” I managed to ask.

“We are fine, dear. We don’t mean to pry, please know we were worried about you. We saw your picture on the front cover of a local gossip magazine then heard about Zander’s interview on E. And well,” he hesitated, “well, dear, your mother called us this morning.”

“My mother called you?”

“She is concerned as well. She said she tried calling you last night but you did not answer. She was surprised to see you were in New York. Maybe you should check your voice mail, give your mother a call, love.
